The End of the Emergence Period

The warm surface temperatures sustained by an unstable atmosphere as well as a still forming protective blanket of gasses were prevalent during the Emergence Period. Perhaps it was this steaming cauldron of oceans that allowed life to first burst forth during the first period of life, known to us as the Emergence Period. Elysia would not remain this warm forever, however. We draw the line ending the Emergence period with two major status changes in the world of Elysia. The first is the formation of floating polar ice caps. These bodies of cool ice created distinct temperature zones, giving rise to heavier rainfall and temperate zones in the world. But more drastic than the temperate weather that would alter the landscape of Elysia was the rise of a new kingdom: the Viruses. With prolific hosts, the viruses began their rampant, unending charge. Their first victims were the fungus that had spread across the entirety of the globe. While they were now contained by the polar ice caps, the water-borne virus strains wiped out all sea-based fungi. This lead to the deaths of many creatures that relied on a constant input of spores for nutrients, not to mention those that directly fed on the fungal beds. With the aqueous fungi removed from the picture, the Aqua Weed, Babel Weed, and sea fans were free to spread across the tropical realms of Elysia unhindered, as the fungi once again became limited to a terrestrial habitat. And with the virus' explosion now reduced to a spark, life was free to continue largely unhindered as the viruses became less of a threat.

The Northern Ice Shelf
In this barren stretch of freezing, subzero temperatures, no life survives. Occasionally a few fungus beds will draw near when the summer rains recede the ice to a more northern latitude, but soon enough the fungi are frozen solid.

The Southern Ice Shelf
A floating ice mass free of land anchors, this uninhabited region is the source of most of Elysia's ice bergs.

Fungal Desert
This region is located between the western mountains and central plains of Elysia’s western continent. Filled with many fungi and the terrestrial worms that prey on them, it is the closest to a forest the surface world has.

Fungal Shores
The reaches of the fungi’s once dominant rule, the stark, gnarled coastline is littered with varieties of fungi feeding off of organisms that float up after dying.

Worm Plains
An extremely fertile swath of land burrowed and aerated by a variety of worms feeding off the soil. The plain keeps the desert fungi and the beach fungi separated.

Ice Locked Sea
An arctic water mass, located on the northern tip of the western continent, this barren sea is often flooded with ice bergs.

Temperate Sea
Another barren northern sea, this expanse opens up to the Tube Plains as well as the open tropical ocean, but is just too cold to support any life that could get there right now.

Stasisweed Seas
Without any predators and no competitors, the Statisweed beds quickly found a home in the far northern and southern seas. The seeds remain dormant for three fourths of the year, during the dark and cold months, until the equivalent of summer arrives, when they burst forth in bloom and quickly grow and reproduce before the cold kills off that year’s stalks. This cycle makes them the only species equipped to handle the cold at this time.

Hazmat and Brambleweed Ocean
By far the largest domain of any organisms, the plentiful Hazmat and Brambleweed Ocean is a large tropical shallow that stretches from continent to continent, and even down to the Ashen Ring. Containing about 60 to 70 percent of the entire biomass of the planet, this truly vast and plentiful expanse is dominated by the sponges and sea weeds that richly cover its floor.

Tube Plains
On the gradual decline to the open ocean on the eastern edge of the Fan Continent reside the aqueous anchored tube varieties, as well as the primitive Aquaweed growths that were cut off from the main growths that became Hazmat and Brambleweeds. A quiet place, much more tranquil than the hectic life around the Hazmat and Brambleweed Ocean, the Tube Plains house many varieties of shells.

Fan Beach
A white sand beach facing the tropical waters, this picturesque beach is dotted with spouting fans which create arching rainbows during daylight hours, especially around dusk.

Fan Plains
The inner heart of the Fan Continent, this gravelly desert is dotted with the interconnected growths of fans that spread up to the mountains. Their feathers are the only thing to break the bleak landscape.

Open Tropical Ocean
While the surface waters may be devoid of life, in the depths live the Blanket Algae in all its rampant growth patterns.

Ashen Ring
A nearly complete ring of interlocked volcanic islands, this odd geomorphologic structure is constantly rained upon by a nutrient rich but choking ash from the cinder peaks.

Bay of Ash
So named for being barely open to the outside ocean and being a thick gray soup of water, the Bay of Ash is home to the avian fan family and a particularly heat-resistant variety of shell.

Description: Raspuras are a carnivorous offshoot of the Algae Gut, evolving to fill the niche as one of the planet's first predators. Raspuras, though constantly hungry, are little threat to healthy algae guts. They move along the sea floor using their one fleshy foot until they happen upon an unhealthy, dead, or dying algae gut. They fall upon the gelatinous mass with what can only be described as slow-motion ferocity, scraping away at the flesh with their tooth-plate and a toothed, rasping, radula. One algae gut will feed a raspura for a month or more, their primitive metabolisms taking days to digest.

Description: The Spout Fan has developed a singular vein running from the very bottom of the fan to the very top, and through the process of cohesion and adhesion water moves from the ocean to the top of the fan, increasing the amount of water the Spout gets to filter, and as an added bonus, the water then gets onto the fans and increases the amount of spores able to stick to the fan. The increase in size is in all directions, adding to the distance the water travels through the plant as well as making it sturdier, and increasing the surface area of the fans.

Description: The Shell Cracker Eel was one of those unlucky worm-type creatures that was constantly falling to the Fighting Fish's aggression. This made it hard for them to survive, and difficult for them to eat their shells in peace as well. This meant that a new way to defend themselves had to be formed, and form one they did. The Shell Cracker Eels became covered in a thin skin, that, while it didn't help their water retention any, did cause amazing static on contact with the water. Thanks to their wriggling motion, this caused it to build rapidly, being stored in special glands all along their body. This meant that any creature that attempted to attack the creature, all the new Shocker Eel had to do was let out that static, zapping a would-be attacker. Also, to aid in its feeding, another sharp tooth appeared in its circular jaw, enabling it to get a better bite out of those Shells.

Description: The Venom Shot Shell was an offshoot of the clever Marksman Shell before it. After having such success with the confusing tactics of shooting a jet of water into their opponents' faces, they developed a way to make that tactic all the more deadly, using the system that was already set up. The Shell began to develop a venomous barb that rested inside of the Hollow Shells. These barbs were coated in a powerful, acidic venom that, once inside a would-be attacker, stayed true to its name. The venom would spread through a person, affecting their cells and causing them to degrade at an alarming rate. It would target the skin and organs of the creatures that were unlucky enough to cross paths with the Shell, causing them to dissolve with an intense burning feeling, to those lucky enough to have a nervous system.

Description: The Burning Shell, true to its name, developed another unique way of defending itself. The Fire Shell previous, since it didn't really have to develop a way of avoiding those creatures that sought to eat it, developed a more effective way of defending against creatures when their young were washed out towards the edges of the Isles, where the water became more lukewarm. The Burning Shell became coated with venomous spines, that, when touched and indeed stepped on/bitten/punctured in any way, gave a predator a nasty jolt of a burning venom. The venom was not too deadly, but once it was put into a predator, it would beget a feeling of being consumed from the inside with fire. The pain would hopefully deter any predator that was stupid enough to attack these still fiery red shells.

Description: The Vacuum Shell was a powerful offshoot of the Cleanser Shell, increasing its Filtration capability by a massive amount. With their increased ability to devour anything that came close to them, the Cleanser Shell had to update its feeding ability to keep up. This allowed it to filter more, faster, thus allowing it to feed more often. Also, within it, it developed a coil of water that rushed downwards through it. This was attached to the funnel that let water into it, and, when combined with a unique Water Filtration Vent, made sure that there was a powerful vacuum of water rushing through it at all times. Water when it reached a vicinity to the Shell began to swirl, before rushing into the funnel and into the coil that lay beneath. This circled the water around and around inside the Shell, allowing the filtering system that was stretched out throughout the coil to devour whatever had been captured. Then, it would rush out of the vent just to one side of it in a wide spew, cleaning the water of anything that would serve as detritus. This also prevented waste that slipped through the filtration skin, such as sand, stone, and the like, from building up, as it was simply ejected along with the water through the vent.

This Shell, when its poison took effect in a creature and made it harder for them to escape, would extend a long feeding arm from beneath its shell, to snake out and wrap around the unfortunate creature. Then, it would be brought down to a basic mouth that the Shell had formed, to be eaten and digested with its new digestive system. A nasty little shell, it began to take the first steps for the normally passive Shell family to begin eating its prey.

Description: The Latching Shell, unlike its predecessor the Crawler Shell, began to take advantage of its newfound agility. It developed a second sticky foot, allowing it to begin a bipedal movement along the ground, helped by its increased strength in foot muscles. This allowed it to move much faster along the ground, before taking advantage of the quicker movement in another way. The Latching Shell was named for the backwards-hooked teeth that began to form inside its basic mouth. This allowed it to bite down on a creature, and not let go. Using its feet to wrap around a potential prey item, it would cling onto the creature, using its shell to defend against any attackers. Once it had bitten down, it didn't let go, instead biting over and over again, before ripping backwards. This made it take large chunks out of the creature for it to devour, before biting down again. Should the creature try to shake it off, all it had to do was remain clamped, and the backwards-hooked teeth would lock it in the creature's flesh.

Description: The Terraformer Worm, a improvement of its predecessor the Terra Worm, took up the mantle of reforming all the desolate, sandy soil, into richer, more life-sustaining soil. It increased in size once more, making it longer and thicker, about the size of a inch wide, by half a foot long. To make up for the increased strain on its moisture, it developed a unique skin, that absorbed any moisture that fell upon it. It was not uncommon to see this Worm on the ground, basking in the rain and indeed, refreshing itself unlike other worms that drowned in their burrows. This combined with its ability to retain the moisture that it absorbed, made it able to support its bigger size easily. Also thanks to this enhancement of its size, and of its water-retaining ability, came the ability to infuse the soil that it passed through with the excess water that it absorbed, further increasing its nutrients and enriching it to levels that any plant would find as sustaining as blood to a vampire.

Description: The Rainbow Shell, previously thought to be the most useless of creatures before, now began to develop a purpose. This creature took up the job that the Terraformer Worms on land could not do, and began to enrich the soil of the ocean floor instead. It would begin to crawl across the sandy ground, using a basic foot that had developed over time, exuding a special kind of slime over the ground that it passed over. This slime enriched the soil that it was applied to, sinking down into the earth and infusing it with life-sustaining nutrients, beneficial to the Fans that called the shallows home. However, in a strange quirk of fate, this slime was also infused with the same rainbow coloring that made its creator the strangest creature in the seas, leaving behind a long stream of the bright coloring. It was as though someone had dipped a paint brush in multiple colors, and then just drug it along the ground behind the Shell, creating a spectacularly colored trail behind it. Though this made those creatures blessed with sight easily able to hunt the Shell, it had quite the aesthetic charm as well.

Description: The Logger Worm was an offshoot of its predecessor, the Harvester. This Worm was unique in the form that it developed a system to digest the plant that it devoured faster, making it able to devour more and more fungi as possible. Also it developed a unique version of its teeth, that, though still made to sever, also developed sharp serrated edges. This meant that when they bit down on the roots of the creature, or the stalk, it could toss its body violently from side to side, using the serrates to essentially saw right through the fungus. This worm also had more of an ability to retain the water that destroying the fungus deprived it of, meaning that it could be more aggressively used against the fungus, without worrying about destroying its only means of retaining moisture.

It now spends its time swimming away from any smells that aren't distinctly dead, and when it has sensed the later, it will immediately follow it to its decaying food source, relying on its inhospitable stomach to protect it against any bacteria that might have gotten there first.

Description: The Spitter Worm developed a rather unique way of taking care of the fungi that were popping up all over the continent. In order to deal with them above ground a bit easier, they developed a long, tube-like tongue, as well as a unique gland that stored acid just behind the tube of a tongue. This allowed them to stick their heads just out of their burrows, and effectively spit this corrosive substance on the stalks of the fungi. This would break down the fungus when it came into contact with the stalk, before returning the fungus to the soil as nutrients, having been broken down and enriched. This allowed the Spitter Worm to effectively remove entire patches of fungus, simply by spitting on them one after the other.

This meant that any creature that bit down on the shell not only had to deal with the spines that covered it, but would also get a healthy dose of its potent, acidic... Well... acid. This would also speed the breaking down of the creature, undoubtedly, which the Hissing Shell's more powerful filtration feeding system would suck up and devour hungrily. It was a win-win situation for the Shell.

This meant that it was unable to resist other predators, or, in large enough doses, that it was killed outright, as it would shut down the precious muscles that allowed them to breathe.

As a coincidental side effect, this added extra incentive for Fungus worm to focus on its namesake, rather than risk picking up one of these unwanted irritants. Besides this, it has also adapted its burrowing holdfast to retrieve nutrients and water from the soil, making the final transformation, if I'm not mistaken, to roots.

The filtrating skin moved down even further into the funnel, and the opening became covered with a unique kind of skin. This skin, when a worm or something moved into the funnel, would constrict, as the worms brushed against sensitive hair triggers that were lining the funnel. This would trap the unfortunate meal inside of the Shell, surrounded by hard walls that would contain them. Following this, the Trapper Shell would begin to excrete digestive enzymes, which would flood into the funnel. This would contain the worms, and slowly digest them, breaking them down into small bits so that the filtration skin below could let them through, to be devoured by its filtration systems.

When threatened, the Puffer Shell takes in water from a unique intake channel, filling a bladder that is attached to the Shell. This bladder inflates rapidly, and stretches the Shell to maximum capability, making it harder for creatures to bite the Shell. This also forces its spines in an outward motion if they are already in a creature's mouth, literally impaling creatures on its shell.

Description: The Supreme Spitter worm is, quite luckily, one of the rarest of the Worm Types. While its close cousin, the Spitter Worm, is more prevalent with its weaker acids, the Supreme Spitter Worm developed a much, much deadlier, and much, much more effective way to destroy. The Supreme Spitter Worm, where the Spitter Worm produced acid, began to develop a chemical named Chlorine Trifluoride. This chemical was highly, highly toxic, and highly corrosive as well. This chemical was stored in a gland that connected to the same tube-like tongue that its cousins had, meaning that unless you looked at it from the inside, you would not be able to tell the difference between a Spitter Worm, and its Supreme counterpart. This chemical, when the worm put its head above ground and spat, would stick to anything that it attacked. The chemical's nature made it highly unstable, and highly corrosive, eating quickly through whatever it came into contact with. As another plus, it was also highly reactive to the Oxygen in the atmosphere, and, would immediately heat up, to the point where it would burst into flames, incinerating the target. This worm was a nasty one indeed...

The Amiofungi Worm formed a symbiotic relationship with the Fungus, burrowing into the roots of the fungus to absorb some of the nutrition that they absorbed. In return, the worm would protect it against any of the other worms that attacked its host, flooding out of the roots to use their severing teeth for good purpose: Severing their brethren in half. They would attack without mercy, and slaughter the worms that were trying to cut down their new partners.

The same basic chemical as the Supreme Spitter was used, Chlorine, but without the Fluorine to mix with it, it was reduced to being a mere poison. However, instead of a tube-like tongue, that was good for squirting, the Poison Needle Worm developed a sharp, needle-like tongue. This allowed it to burrow up and slam its head into either a fungus' roots, a fellow worm, or whatever prey it decided upon (They had been known to attack even the Fans.), and stick its tongue deep into its opponent. Following this brutal stabbing, the gland that held the chlorine would be squeezed, injecting the opponent syringe-style with the deadly chlorine gas.

Thirdly, before this is updated again, I will be launching a side project called Anabasis: Lunar Life on this forum, where we will use an identical formula for creating life on a few moons of a gas giant in the same solar system as Elysia. To give you a little taste, here is my prose description of the first moon we will be populating:

—It’s a wonder how life can be supported on a moon coated entirely in ice. Its extremes befuddle all who set their telescopes on it. How can an icy, geyser-covered moon surrounded by a mist-like atmosphere that was likely saturated with ice crystals support any form of life? But the readings from the probe were clear. Unicellular life had existed there for quite some time… and evidence multicellular life wasn’t far off. The entire League of Planets held its breath as the first readings came in…

The probe’s image showed us the source of the life-readings. A series of subterranean tubes of flowing water, heated to a temperate level, pervaded the icy planet. Our scientists had guessed so much, but there’s only so much a Gorogn can assume without seeing for himself. The picture became fuzzy for a bit, then refocused on a horde of golden bacteria huddling around the beginning of Zabada, the largest geyser on the moon.

Right then, something hit the probe from behind. White coats fluttered all around, curses filled the viewing room as the picture faded in and out. Before the probe finally began its self-disrepair mechanisms to destroy all evidence it had ever been there, the picture showed what was clearly a multicellular organism. Was it intelligent enough to know the probe was a threat? Was it consciously choosing its own path? Did it even have a brain? These questions would need to be answered another time… the probe
Kezzyma XVI will be ready for launch in a week to investigate. What would we find? Would we be able to find anything? Was the ‘creature’ really just an oddly shaped piece of ice? Hopefully the answers will come back soon, because I don’t want to have to wait… Grannos holds many secrets below its ice-locked surface.—

I hope this experiment will be fun for everyone, and if it catches on, I’ve got more moons made to be flushed out. Right now I’m planning on updating a moon, then Elysia, then the next moon, then Elysia, etc. So the original game always takes precedence, but while I work on that, you’ll have other options. One last thing about the updates; the Algae Gut line is being sorely underappreciated. They want to evolve too. Though it uses the exact same chemical that the Supreme Spitter uses, the Emperor Needle Worm has separated the Fluorine and Chlorine, into two separate needle-tongues. With this unique dual-needle tongue, it injects first one chemical, then the other, into whatever it targets, so that the chemical forms INSIDE the target, scorching it from the inside out. This way, the Emperor Needle Worm does not end up destroying itself as the Supreme Spitter did, and perfects the use of this deadly chemical.

With the increase in its potency, so has its targets. It moved on to attacking anything in sight, destroying its prey with its unique chemical before devouring them as they are destroyed.

With the drainage vent not increasing in size as well, what once meant that it slowly scooted across the ground, now meant that it actually got a good form of mobility, as the powerful suction was forced now to expel through a small hole, creating in essence, a makeshift jet. This allowed it to hover just over the ocean floor, moving from place to place and even chasing down those speedy creatures, exposing them to the current for longer, to wear down their stamina.

The Turbine Shell was named for more than just its increased power, though. The Turbine Shell was named quite carefully after a bladed engine, as the inside of the funnel developed sharp ridges that coiled down along the funnel, in a screw-like pattern. This meant that anything that got sucked into it would find itself being slammed against these ridges, and be sliced into pieces by the force of it, being cut smaller and smaller as the funnel went down and down, to be picked out of the increased coil by the filtration. This was a unique and deadly way to increase its filtering food source, that was beginning to die off thanks to the Virus epidemic.

It began to reproduce faster and faster, until it could match or even outstrip its competitor's reproduction rate, allowing it to cull the tide much easier. The Carrier Worm would be raised, from birth, in the roots of the fungus that it had come to rely on. Bonding with the roots of the fungus and allowing it to perforate the worm's increased size, the Carrier Worm showed off a unique might. It would begin to burrow once the fungus was seated inside of the worm, and carry the fungus with it, to spread it to new areas that were previously unreachable thanks to the fungus' sedate previous approach, relying on a gentle wave of spores to carry it along. Now, it had a chauffeur, as the worm carried a single fungus around, spreading its spores with impunity.

Unfortunately, the lifespan of this worm was notoriously short, as it put a great deal of strain upon the worms, and drained them of nutrients quickly. However, when they died, it simply fed the fungus that they were attached to from its carcass, allowing the mushroom to settle into its new home, wherever the Carrier had given up the ghost.

Description:This adaptation of the Jetstream Aggressor has developed multiple cups along its tentacles, which are connected to the water intake channel already present in such a way that water is constantly moving into them, and as such if they are blocked, they will latch on to whatever surface caused the blockage, creating a vacuum seal. It has also dramatically altered its shell, changing it from rough chitin armour to a hydrodynamic weapon, allowing it to skewer its prey.

This has a rather gruesome side effect of sucking out the blood of its victims as their skin is breached, due to the new water intake channel inside a hole in the tip of the shell, developed to allow the tentacles to be used, or left trailing behind, without interrupting movement. And I'm not sure if this is necessary, but I do eventually plan on putting another six tentacles on this thing, so if I have to designate the holes in the shell now, I want them directly opposite and at right angles to the original.

Description: The Sniper Shell was the only shell that worked more firmly on their ability to actually hit their targets, rather than simply firing a volley of shots from every needle point on its body, hoping that one of them will hit. The Sniper Shell began to develop two things very important both to its survival, and to its ability to hunt for food: It developed a basic brain, and a basic eye, that allowed it to detect predators that attacked it or food, based on changes in light and shadow. The brain allowed it to gauge the distance more accurately, and to work on relating it to what shot it should fire within it to hit its prey.

As well, the Sniper Shell, finding that its opponents were gradually getting more and more armored, began to develop the water storage and release muscles that were within it, allowing it to increase the water pressure inside of it. Not only did this help to puncture the more thickly-skinned opponents that it faced, but it meant that it would do a bit more damage and sink a bit deeper in, making the venomous barb that they fired out more dangerous, and harder to remove.

Description: The Hook Shell is exactly as it sounds. Utilizing the hook-like teeth that were in its basic mouth, much like its predecessor the Latching Shell, the Hook Shell would latch onto and devour whatever prey that it wished. However, the only downfall to this was that many of its prey choices were armored, and when it attempted to bite through the hard shells, it wouldn't be able to pierce. To rectify this, the Hook Shell developed basic jaw muscles, to allow it to gnaw more efficiently on the shells until it pierced through, utilizing a unique, scraping motion in order to hunt for kinks in the armor.

Another downfall of its predecessor had been that the sticky feet that allowed the Shell to move and stick to its chosen prey were not strong enough to hold it on the stronger, faster predators. To rectify this as well, the Hook Shell developed two, strong tentacles, that would wrap down and around the creature that it chose to attack, giving it a firmer grip. This also allowed it to move from place to place on the creature if it so wished, as earlier if it had detached its feet in order to try and attach to a more advantageous spot, it would have simply fallen off. Now, it could utilize its powerful grip to move itself around a creature, until it found either a place where it could break through armor, find a weaker point to kill a creature faster, or simply to readjust its grip.

Finally, the Burning Snail developed an enriching slime beneath it much like the Iced Rainbow Snail, that saw to the fertilization of any soil that it crossed, as well as easing its movement over the ground. Most ironic about this was that its natural home was the Volcanic Islands, which was rather a dangerous place for the snail to choose. Considering the ground there was already fertile from sediments and ores brought up from the depths of the earth through the flows of lava, it also couldn't get much more nutritious.

Glad to see you guys are still keeping active in my week of absence. I'll be back home in a little over 24 hours, and can spend more time talking to you all and getting everything going, but for now, just one issue with your submission, Jisaan. "Basic Skeletal Structure" is either too vague for which bones you are developing, or too broad if you are trying to add a full skeleton at once. Start with something like "Rib Cage", "Pectoral Fin Bone", "Tail Bone", or "Segmented Chordate" to get your basic structure started. Skeletons will take a while to develop, and is definitely a long term project for your creatures.

Description: The Glass Shard Shell is a particularly nasty little creature that evolved from the Venom Shot Shell. While its polar opposite and cousin the Shadow Shot Shell DARKENED its Shell in order to hide from its enemies and become a better ambusher, the Glass Shard Shell stuck to the light, and instead developed a unique, and very beautiful mutation:

The Shell, the Barbs that it fired out of its hollow spines, and the tendons that connected the Shell to the creature all became as clear as fine crystal, allowing it to blend perfectly in light and darkness. Though in order to get the crystal-like shell it had to thin it out and make it more susceptible to damage, it also made it harder to detect. This, and the barbs turning clear meant that when it fired, there was no trace of the barbs to be seen, so it would be harder to dodge the shots that it fired.

Of course this wouldn't be too effective if instead of a Shell it looked like there was a bright pink blob of muscle just lying on the ground, so the Shell developed a third, equally important mutation: The skin that covered it began to develop a pigment, much like is found in a Chameleon's scales. Though weak at this point in time, it still allowed it to change its color somewhat towards the background, allowing it to blend somewhat instead of looking like someone stuck a wad of bubble gum on the sea floor. At this time, it is also beyond the Shell's control, and the color changes naturally towards the sea floor beneath, or its surroundings.

Description: The Chisel Shell was an offshoot of the Latching Shell that took advantage of its ability to grip the hardened shells of its prey, sometimes even including its cousins and relatives, the other Shells. The Chisel Shell developed a sharp spine that was attached to its bottom, near its stomach and mouth. This spine was attached to a unique muscle that would shove the spine downwards, with a power that was enough to chip and chisel its way through the hardest of shells.

It was not uncommon to see a Latching Shell hanging onto a Jetstream Aggressor or other such predator, utilizing its own defense against it, as it remained beyond reach, chiseling gradually down to the soft flesh hidden within, before spearing its prey with the spine, feeding on it when the prey finally died.
