Virhn Thranuil - 1

The forest still held the darkness of night, despite the sun rising in the east. The tree canopy cast eerie but familiar shadows across the trail as the horse galloped on. Virhn needed to get to the Ainur kingdom before the sun rose fully to avoid seeing the elves. Although the elves ignored him, he preferred not to encounter any. It was a silly preference, but one none the less. He drove his stirrups into the horse’s ribs, encouraging it to run faster. Virhn hoped that this venture would prove to be much more successful than the last, even though he had gained some more gold coins to add to his dwindling supply. He would quickly spend them, as he needed to replace his worn out boots. Virhn had read that this kingdom’s military was miniscule compared to majority of its neighbors. While it was small, Virhn had also read how the two sections of their military were supposedly extremely elite. In any case, he was curious of how good they could fight.

He could now see the edge of the forest as well as the expansive fortification surrounding the entire Ainur City. In the background, he could see the grandiose palace of the kingdom. As Virhn cleared the forest, he pulled on the reigns to slow his horse down to a trot. Now that he was out of the forest, the chances of encountering elves were slim. With his slow approach, Virhn could get a full grasp of the strategical placement of the Ainur kingdom’s capital. From what he could see at this distance, there were three entrances. He automatically assumed that one entrance was for visitors, one for citizens, and one for soldiers. Keeping visitors separate from citizens was an intelligent idea. It provided citizens protection from the rowdiness that some visitors created by getting drunk at the bars. Virhn’s eyebrows furrowed as he realized that there were probably many more entrances hidden in the steep rocky mountains surrounding the castle. He understood that he would probably have to use one of them in order to sneak into the castle if that proved to be necessary. In any case, all that Virhn wanted to do for the day was to find a cheap inn, buy a pair of boots, and walk around listening to gossip.

Virhn was close enough now to see that his assumption on the gates was correct. Knowing that he would only be permitted to enter through the visitor’s gate, Virhn pulled on the reigns to turn the horse so they could approach the visitor’s gate. Virhn frowned to himself as he realized that the gate guard would most likely ask for his name and purpose for entering. He thought about giving them a false name but quickly squashed the idea. Two days earlier he had bumped into some elves so they knew that he was heading for Ainur. The Ainur Kingdom was known for its good relations with the elves so they were no doubt informed that he was coming. Virhn sighed to himself in frustration that his name was so well known. That had created problems in the past. Now that Virhn was approaching the gate, he knew he would be asked at any time now. Virhn now pulled his horse to a stop and waited for the guard to question him. After a few moments, one of the guards appeared at the top of the gate.

“You want to enter the city traveler?”

Virhn nodded his head in acknowledgement.

“Then state your name and your business in the city.”

Virhn sighed at what he knew was inevitable and then answered.

“I am Virhn Thranuil. My business is to search for an item, purchase new boots, and rest at one of your inns. I plan on staying only for a few days.”

The guard jerked his head at hearing the name and signaled for another guard. For a minute or two, the two guards conversed intensely before speaking to Virhn again.

“Mr. Virhn Thranuil, you may enter the city. Don’t think about causing any problems. The guard will not hesitate to place you in prison if you do. Is this understood?”

Virhn hid his grin as the guard spoke. He found it amusing how the guard’s voice shook while giving him permission to enter the city. Cause problems? Virhn normally didn’t cause the problems. Problems had a way of always coming to him. In any case, he was pleased that the guards didn’t ask him to surrender his sword before entering. Some other kingdoms had and Virhn had always found that annoying.

“It is fully understood. I have no intention of causing problems but I have no problem in stopping them. Thank you.”

The gate was opened for Virhn and he had his horse slowly walk into the city. Virhn’s eyebrows rose as he noticed that there were not many guards patrolling the streets. Being that it was still early morning, not many people were walking the streets yet. Virhn was pleased with his foresight to rise extra early since it was possible for only a few people to see who he was and pester him. The whole city would most likely be talking a lot about his arrival but at least they wouldn’t be able to recognize him. Virhn felt tired, so he kept his eyes open for an inn as he went down the street. Before long he spotted one that didn’t look like it would be too expensive to get a room for a few days. Virhn stopped the horse in front of it and dismounted. A second later, a young boy ran up and grabbed the reigns.

“I’ll bring your horse to the stalls mister. I’ll give it plenty of water and oats.”

Virhn looked down at the kid and smiled slightly. The boy wasn’t dressed in rags as many other stable boys in other kingdoms were. Virhn reached into his cloak and grabbed two copper coins that were hidden in a pouch and tossed them to the boy.

“Treat that horse well kid, I’ll come down later to get my bags. Hmmm… Actually, I’ll pay you a silver if you bring them up to my room once I get one, if you are willing.”

The boy gasped at being offered a silver and nodded emphatically that he’d do it. Virhn then left the boy to tend to his horse and entered the inn. Virhn looked around the common room and was pleased to see that it was very tidy and clean. As he was looking around the common room, the innkeeper approached Virhn.

“Can I help you sir?”

“Yes, how much do you charge for a room?”

“I charge two silvers a night. This includes breakfast and dinner. The room is not entered for cleaning until you are done staying.”

Virhn raised his eyebrows at the price of the room. It was a very good deal compared to most other inn’s he had been to.

“You give a good deal innkeeper. I’d like to have a room for four days. I’ll pay for all of the days now if you like.”

The innkeeper grinned and pulled out a room key.

“Yes, that would be good. I’ll give you room seventeen. Enjoy your stay.”

Virhn pulled out eight silver coins and handed them to the innkeeper. The innkeeper tossed the key to Virhn and went back to cleaning the bar counter. Virhn walked through the halls of the inn until he found his room. He used his key and entered. The room was pretty small but it did have a chair, bed, chest, and a small table. Virhn removed his cloak and sword and tossed the cloak on the chair. Leaning his sword against the head of the bed, Virhn went ahead and lay on the bed. He closed his eyes and was just about asleep when there was a knock on his door. Grabbing his sword, he was quick to answer. Upon opening it, the stable boy stumbled in with his bags. Virhn took the heaviest ones and placed them on the floor underneath the window. He then took a silver coin out of his pouch and handed it to the boy.

“Thanks kid. Take good care of my horse and I’ll give you some extra copper coins…ok?”

“Yeah sir… anytime sir. If you want a tour of the city I’ll give you one sir, thank you sir!”

With that said, the kid ran out. Virhn grinned at how eager the kid was to give him a tour. Virhn replaced his sword at the head of the bed again and laid down. He wondered if he would find his mystical item here. Seven years of searching had resulted only in clues to its location. Virhn’s last thought before falling asleep was that he would nap for a couple hours and then go find himself some mythril plated boots if he could find them.

Strisas Kurhn - 2

The wind was picking up a little, but the sun was out in full force. It was a bright day, with the sun appearing directly overhead. There was a flock of birds encircling the meadow that was in between the great city of Ainur and the forest that was Aindurille. Beautiful purple flowers blossomed over the whole field, and the city in the background was almost of a celestial radiance. Usually there would be children running through the meadow near the city, but there was warning and no children were out of the gate today. There was a small band of orcs that appeared on the eastern side of the city, on the eastern shore of the Everael. Even though that can be construed as far enough to do any harm, the Ainurians were a cautious people, and valued peace and love above all else. But they would take care of any threat that happened upon their borders, and this, even though far enough to do harm, was a threat. Some were dispatched to take care of such a problem.

Ainur was known for being a beautiful city, in which most of the city area was designated to its main civilian populace. Its roads were clean, its houses were of heavenly white, and its population was peaceful and kind. Everyone respected each other and there was no need for weapons or garrisons, for there were hardly any fights or major disputes. Ainur was known throughout the known area and parts of the world as a place of beauty and peace. However, just because it was such a beautiful place and that the people valued peace did not mean that they were unprotected. Every citizen knew how to use a sword and fight if combat should come to them: from man, woman, and elder childs. All citizens were quite skilled and if need should arise for such an armament of the city, it could easily provide an army fully prepared and ready. But the citizen army did not contend with everything that happened in the outside world. For this, there were two elite groups. These two elite squadrons were known throughout the world too as the “best-of- the-best” when it came down to protection measures. It could handle just about anything thrown at it, and was brilliant with all sorts of arms and enemies. They were the outside protectors of the white walls of Ainur, and they were even requested by outside countries for help if a problem should arise. These two elite squadrons, the White Shadows and the Knights Sol, handled all outside matters, from getting rid of troublesome enemies, to ambassadorial matters and situations. The Knights Sol were busy out west helping a village from invading ruffians and bad men. However, the White Shadows were sent to deal with the band of orcs that had made its way into our territory and out in the open. The White Shadows had just returned from disposing of the problem, and entered the section of the city devoted to the armed forces. They were resting from the battle, and had no casualties, although they had a few lightly injured. However two people were not with them; they were the two in command of the White Shadows. Captain Trillian was standing on the outer edge of the wooded area of Aindurille as the sun was setting. He was waiting. He turned towards the woods and smiled.

"So, how goes everything Strisas?”

Commander Strisas Kurhn never minded the lack of protocol that his second-in-command showed. He knew that he got all the respect necessary from him, and he knew that Trillian would always follow his orders without question.

“I think you’re forgetting something, Captain.”

A little smile: “Of course Commander. Sorry Sir.”

“Nothing of interest is happening as of late,” said Kurhn as he emerged more out of the shadow of Aindurille. “The Wood Elves are thankful of our assistance, even though they would have disposed of them themselves, as they reminded me. However, you know them well also; they are glad that hey didn’t have to leave their precious forest borders.”

"I do know that indeed," replied Trillian, “but it would have been fun to see them do it themselves. However, I liked that we had a chance for some little battle with the orcs.”

Kurhn sighed heavily. “You look to forward to battle, and yet it may be upon us shortly.” Trillian looked inquisitively. “The Elves do bring us some news that we do not know. Apparently the small orc band was just a scavenging party, and that they were in great haste and with a mission of some sorts. That could explain why they were traveling in the sunlight.”

“It could indeed” said Captain Trillian. “Scouts reporting back from the mountains said they dispatched of some orc groups heading eastwards also.”

“The Elves had more to say on that subject also,” he explained. “something very interesting. Apparently, one of the areas due eastwards of us has fallen into despair. Orcs have been pillaging the area along with other ruffians and thieves. It seems very similar to that which is happening westwards, where Commander Escari is right now with his squadron. I think we should send out a little expedition to find out what is going on out there.”

"I agree sir," said Trillian as his frown offered much of the concern growing in his mind.

“I can see that your troubled, but you shouldn’t worry. They pose little threat as of yet to our fair city, and we would know far in advance of any open hostility.” For this, Commander Kurhn smiled again. "Come, let us continue back to our kingdom and have some peace and rest."

"I will look forward to it" said Captain Trillian as he climbed back on his horse and both rode off towards the eastern gate or Ainur.

They were greeted upon there arrival with cheering and salutes. The soldiers in the barracks at the moment were reserve garrison troops for the visitor’s section, guards for the outer and inner gates, and the remaining White Shadows that stayed in the area. There was a bit of noise coming from the surrounding area, mostly the hustle of soldiers and troops talking and moving about, but also from the pounding and forging of armor. Strisas learned from some of his smiths that they had just received a new supple of mythril from our friends in the immediate west. He got undressed in his home on the barracks and put on his casual clothes, with his sword on him of course. The only people allowed to have swords outside in the city were soldiers and nobles. He received a daily report from a messenger who just got back from the west with the Knights Sol. He reported that Commander Escari and his troop had just completed their task and were heading home. They should be home in a couple of days.

Kurhn thought to himself how much he had wanted to speak to Escari about the troubles in the world the elves have been repeatedly telling them about lately. He wanted to know if the captain though anything was weird or unspoken in the lands to the west. He was friendly with Escari, for they had grown up together, and there was almost a sibling rivalry to their actions. But they let it not show, and they loved each other like brothers and comrades anyway. However, Escari was more disruptive then Kurhn would have liked, and Strisas thought about it more and more in the days that passed. It didn’t matter though; Escari had his full support and trust, as well as the ruling family and they in him. They liked to spar, wrestle, and swordplay, and sometimes there would be a glint in his eyes to worry about. But that would be for later. Now, he would have some cooling down time and rest and relaxation. He thought and planned to get to the visitors section where there was a great bar in an inn that he liked to go to. He liked to drink with the people of the outside world, and find out more about things in all directions that should be of no concern or of very little. He was about to leave the gates to go into the main area when a guard approached him.

"Sir, I have news of an interesting sort," said the young guard who usually worked outside the visitor's sections.

"Well, what is it?" Kurhn asked anxiously as he says the look on the soldiers face.

"Someone has just arrived." He took a gulp before he continued on. "He goes by the name Virhn Thranuil."

Virhn Thranuil - 3

Virhn yawned as he sat up. He slowly stretches his legs hearing his knees loudly crack. Virhn had hoped to sleep for another hour but the loud cheering in the streets made sleep impossible. Curious, Virhn stood up and peered out the window to see what all the noise was about. People were already returning to their business so Virhn had no idea what the ruckus had been about. In any case, he wasn’t concerned. Now that he was awake, Virhn felt like walking the streets. He hoped that he could find a place that sold the boots he wanted but doubted it. Mythril was a rare and expensive material so Virhn would most likely have to deal with normal leather boots once again.

Virhn grabbed his sword and strapped it back to his waist. He then grabbed his cloak and put it on before stepping out the door. Virhn walked past the common room and exited the inn into a crowded street. He looked up at the different signs as he walked from street to street before finally finding a store that sold boots. Virhn stepped through a crowd of people and entered the store. Looking around, he realized that this store sold a large variety of mythril-plated goods. Virhn wondered how there seemed to be such an abundant supply here when every other kingdom was hard put to get it and even reserve it only for military purposes. Rather than waste time searching all day for a fitting pair of boot, Virhn approached the store counter and waited for the person in front of him to finish. As the person was about to leave, he turned to give the shop owner one last statement.

“Hey, better be careful for a bit, I’ve heard that Virhn Thranuil’s in the city”

“What!? Nah, why would he come here?”

“How would I know? After what he did to the Bershut Kingdom, I’d rather he wouldn’t be here. Hopefully I’m wrong and he’ll never show himself in Ainur.”

Having said that the person left and the shopkeeper turned his attention to Virhn.

“How can I help you sir?”

Virhn was shocked that the news of his arrival had spread so quickly. Apparently his shock showed enough to catch the shopkeeper’s attention.

“Listening, were you? Bah! Don’t worry, Thranuil’ll never come here. Besides, the Knights Sol or the White Shadows would be able to take care of him anyway. Now, back to business. How can I help you?”

Virhn could almost find it amusing how the shopkeeper thought he would never come. Virhn sighed before he finally responded.

“Yes, I see that you have quite a collection of boots here. Do you happen to have a pair of mythril plated boots that can be fitted for me?”

The shopkeeper came around the counter and bent down to look at Virhn’s boots.

“Sheesh, you’ve certainly abused those boots. I recognize the work. They were well made. If you would be so kind as to take them off and allow me to measure you, I’m sure I can have a pair of boots ready for you in an hour, mythril plated and all for twelve gold pieces or Ainurian equivalent weight.”

Virhn’s eyes widened at the price. Considering how rare mythril was, the price for the plated boots was a third cheaper than he ever expected. He gladly removed his boots and handed them to the shopkeeper. Reaching into his pouch, Virhn carefully counted out the gold pieces and placed them on the scale. Satisfied, the shopkeeper bent down and took the necessary measurements.

“I have a waiting area right over there with some reading while you wait for me to finish.”

Virhn nodded and proceeded top take a seat and pick up one of the papers. Much to his surprise, it contained basic information on the conditions throughout the kingdom of Ainur. What caught Virhn’s eye was the bit of information regarding the White Shadows. They had been dispatched to handle a rogue orc band slightly inside the lands of the kingdom. They were expected back sometime today according to the paper. Virhn chuckled as that most likely explained what the ruckus was about earlier in the day. Virhn noted to himself the commanding names of the White Shadows. Commander Kurhn and Captain Trillian. Virhn had heard some stories about Kurhn but knew nothing about Trillian. The amount Virhn knew about Kurhn was very limited. All that he knew was that supposedly Kurhn was unmatchable with the sword by anyone in the kingdom and his commanding skills were top notch as he had not lost a single soldier in the six years of his command. Virhn believed that he might encounter him since he would no doubt be present if the king agreed to meet with Virhn when he requests it.

“Sir, Your boots are finished.”

The shopkeeper proceeded to toss the boots to Virhn. Virhn decided to examine them thoroughly. He took out his small excellent steel knife and sliced as hard as he could into the mythril plating. The knife snapped without leaving a mark on the plating. For it not to have even a mark meant that the mythril was as pure as can be and top quality. Virhn smiled and put the boots on and found them a perfect fit and comfortable. Virhn Smiled some more as he looked up at the shopkeeper.

“These are perfect. The plating is flawless and the boots are comfortable and were even a low price. My thanks to you”

Virhn decided that he should give more gold since the boots were much more than he ever expected. He dug out two more gold coins and tossed them to the shopkeeper. He thanked Virhn for the business and Virhn proceeded to leave.
Now Virhn only had one more task for the day before he returned to the inn. He would proceed to the castle to formally request an audience with the king of Ainur for the next day. This request had Virhn concerned. Due to his reputation, an audience with the king could very well be denied. He hoped that wouldn’t be the case or else he would have to sneak into the castle instead, a far less appealing option.
Approaching the outer castle audience request building, Virhn sighed and continued to enter the building. Upon entering, Virhn was very surprised. Even though this building was situated on the outer wall of the Ainur castle, it’s interior had the looks of a mighty castle’s great hall. The building was also swarming with people and surprisingly, no one at the foreign audience request desk. Virhn stared in amazement for a moment longer before approaching the main desk. The clerk looked up with an obviously bored expression.

“I take it that you sir would like to request an audience with the king? Do you also realize that even with the request, there is the possibility on not being accepted and sent to another of the king’s mediators?”

Another surprise for Virhn. In most kingdoms, if an audience to the king was refused, that meant no audience at all. Virhn nodded to the clerk.

“Very well then. State the purpose for the request and your name.”

“I wish to make a formal request for aid from the king in locating an item of great importance. Second, I wish to request permission to enter the dwarven realm to make a similar request.”

“Hmmmm… that kind of audience is generally reserved for a lower official rather than a royal audience to warn you. And your name sir?”

“I sincerely hope an audience will be granted for the matter is of great importance. My name is Virhn Thranuil.”

The clerk instantly dropped his pen and stared in complete shock, as did everyone in the immediate vicinity. The clerk sputtered and stood up. Virhn barely understood the clerk with the unclear talk.

“uhhh…..ummm.. Jut……one….ummmm…. moment… uhhh… please…”

The clerk ran from the desk shoving people out of his way and entered a back room. Virhn stood calmly while fully aware that people were staring a whispering all around him. After about a minute, the clerk reentered the main hall accompanied by one person. This person was obviously a soldier of high rank, possibly nobility. Virhn was immediately cautious and readied himself for action if necessary while never changing his appearance on the surface. The soldier approached Virhn with the clerk slightly behind him and white as a sheet. The soldier gave a slight bow to Virhn that Virhn returned courteously.

“Captain Trillian of White Shadows at your service Master Thranuil. You may indeed have an audience with the king. Unfortunately, the audience cannot be arranged until afternoon tomorrow. Will this be acceptable to you?”

Virhn was surprised that the second in command of the White Shadows would personally greet him and shocked the he would guarantee an audience. Virhn noticed that Captain Trillian was both, taller, and much more muscular looking than Himself. Virhn wasn’t short standing at five feet ten inches and not nearly as impressive looking as this captain. Virhn had light brown hair and medium build to him. The only feature that really stood out on him was his unique eyes, eyes that usually confirmed his identity to any who doubted. Virhn’s eyes were medium green with many shiny silver specks in them underneath a pair of small glasses. Virhn looked in Trillian’s eyes when responding so his own eyes could clearly be seen.

“Captain Trillian, that is most acceptable and welcome. I am honored to be answered by the second in command of the famous White Shadows. I will return tomorrow afternoon for the audience.”

Trillian and Virhn clasped arms and slightly bowed before parting. Virhn was immensely relieved that he was going to be allowed to meet with the king. That had the potential to prevent many problems. Now that Virhn had finished enough business for one day, he decided to return to his in eat dinner and get plenty of rest. The next day was going to be a very long and interesting day.

Strisas Kurhn – 4

Strisas woke up with a start. He was dreaming, and not an altogether good one. He was having yet another vision of dark places with little light, and of sad events taking place. East…his mind was on the east. He rubbed his eyes. It was a new day, and this day should be more interesting than normal days inside the city. His presence was normally required for royal court functions or proceedings, but in this case, it was special. A visitor entered in yesterday that brought with him an air of suspicion. Not only was he well-known, his popularity due to mysterious circumstances, but he had right away requested an audience with the king. Now, usually visitors would be seen by a court squire or representative, but in this case, an exception was made. Such a high-profile individual like Virhn Thranuil would get special treatment.

Strisas looked outside the window at the lighting of the sky just before dawn strikes. He surveyed his room. It was small and quite cozy. He liked sleeping above the barracks; yes, ion his little room by himself, but still what he considered to be “with his men.” There was a small bed, a closet, a desk with many papers on it, and a sink. Getting up groggily, he went to the sink and splashed some water on his face. His profile was staring back at him from the mirror above it. Still considered a young man, the tall Commander of the White Shadows looked more like a prince than a soldier. His long brown hair and blue eyes made him look like nobility, and he was. Belonging to one of the noble houses of Ainur, it was one of the reasons why he knew the Prince and was even a knight. But still, he liked his little room above the barracks. He liked to spend as much time as possible with his fellow soldiers: laughing, training, and having drinks with them. It made him feel more like on of the guys instead of a noble. Sure, he had his room in his families’ house, but he hardly stays there anymore. Strisas washed his face, rinsed his mouth, and dressed in his casual green tunic and pants and went downstairs to eat breakfast.

Greeted by some of his squad, since it was still rather early, he ate some breakfast and decided to exercise with the ones that were awake. He never held scheduled physical training times or anything like that. He had full confidence in his troops, and they all exercised in their own way. Leaving his sword behind, Strisas decided to have a run through the central housing in the city. Nodding to the guard as he jogged by, he entered the main city. He nodded to different shopkeepers that were busy opening their bakeries and butcheries, and other such places. However, his mind was on the uninvited visitor and of the concerns he had in his dream. Why was Virhn Thranuil here? Why did he want an audience with the king? The guard had told Trillian, who told Strisas, that he was here “to make a formal request for aid from the king in locating an item of great importance.” He also wished “to request permission to enter the dwarven realm to make a similar request.” Well, the dwarven kingdom, of which Ainur has a long-standing partnership, can do what they want. It was not their business to meddle into the politics of their kingdom, but only if it concerns their friendship. The dwarves usually did not meddle with what they considered “outsiders”, but maybe Virhn will get through. Strisas’s mind kept flipping to this item that Virhn wanted: what could it possible be: a piece of armor, a weapon, a magical item? I guess the only thing to do was wait and see, Strisas thought to himself.

Getting back to the barracks, Strisas took a shower and then ate another second breakfast (he liked to eat a little bit after a run). His squad was all awake now, and was eager for Strisas’s views on the reason behind the unexplained visitor’s visit.

“Is he dangerous”, “What does he want” and “is it going to be like Bershut,” were just some of the questions his people asked.

“I honestly do not know, and I will not know until after today’s meeting”, he said as he moved towards were Captain Trillian was sitting with rolls of parchment in front of him.

“Sir, we have some more status reports. Commander Escari has ridden ahead of this squadron and will be here midday. The Knights Sol will be here that following night. He wants to be here for Thranuil’s appointment.”

Strisas nodded. He knew that Escari would not have missed anything in front of the royal family that would be important. He probably heard the news of Thranuil’s visit and wanted to be in the high court for the audience. Also, it was customary for high court functions to have both commanders of the elites at the left and right sides of the royal family.

“Also sir, we have more reports of increasing activity with ruffians in the east. They seemed to be well armed and organized. Can I make a speculation?” offered Trillian.

“Of course”, Strisas replied back.

“I believe that maybe they are armed forces from a nearby kingdom, stripping off their insignias and crests so they could not be identified.”

“Hmmm…this is a very dangerous theory. As we have no prisoners or captives, and I believe neither does Escari, we have no basis. Why do you believe this?” inquired Strisas.

“They have become more and more aggressive, and their targets have been chosen carefully. We should make the Assembly to figure out what is going on, sir.”

Strisas knew full well that Trillian was probably right. The Assembly would be the best place to bring up his concerns, relay the information provided by Elves, and inquire more about strategies. The Assembly consisted of both leaderships of each Squadron, the Watcher of the guard, and the generals, along with the King. They would probably have one after Virhn Thranuil’s audience with the King.

“I will ask for a scheduling after the audience. That should be sufficient.”

“Yes sir” exclaimed Trillian.

For a while longer, the two of them sat talking about home, about Ainur, and about the growing threats. Strisas was anxious to hear back from Escari, and had hoped he had heard some news over in the westward bounds. He looked up.

“It’s time to get ready Trillian. Have the squad train a little and take some time off. Meet me after the audience so we can have the Assembly. I do not know what Thranuil wants, but he would have to be watched afterwards most likely.”

At this, both Kurhn and Trillian headed off into the barracks. Getting washed up and looking presentable, he dressed himself in his armor, the bright mythril gleaming in the sun. Adjusted the belt and straps and made sure that he was fit to be in front of the royal family. Attaching his sword to his belt, making sure his pendant was noticeable, and grabbing his grand helm (only for royal meetings), he issued off towards the castle in the niche between the mountains. As he looks up at the magnificent building he was approaching, he was quite hoping to catch a few words with Prince Turgon before Thranuil was to come.

Virhn Thranuil – 5

Virhn tugged at the neck of his formal outfit. If it wasn’t necessary, he would have worn his preferred outfit. A loose, light material that hindered no movement whatsoever, the normal, comfortable leather belt perfect for holding his sword at ready at all times without appearing threatening, and his dark blue, almost black cloak with the Silvril clasp were his preferred clothes. But appearing to an audience with a king with that outfit would take away any positive effect he could muster to getting his way. Instead, his formal outfit was designed to make Virhn look impressive and dangerous, but without the appearance of hostility. In reality, the formal clothes really did hinder his movement a bit. The comfort he had on this was the fact that everyone else in the audience would also be fitted in formal attire. One precaution that Virhn decided to make was to wear his silvril gloves. They looked like ordinary formal gloves but with the metal sown into the clothe, he could stop a normal sword with his hands without injury.

Virhn arrived early for the audience and was waiting for the formal announcement for him to enter. The guards posted in front of the chamber were trying not to stare but Virhn kept catching them at it. These guards were obviously nervous at his presence. He was a bit surprised at this because these were supposed to be seasoned soldiers; otherwise they never would have been posted as guards here.

Virhn had heard that the commander, Commander Escari, had arrived a few moments ago. It was going to be interesting that both commanders would be at the audience Virhn thought. He hoped that they wouldn’t cause any problems.

“Master Thranuil, you may enter now.”

Virhn sighed. Audiences with kings were never easy and always involved an intricate play of words. Virhn entered the room and immediately took account of the surroundings. On both sides of the room, half a squad of soldiers lined them. One side for the White Shadows and one side for the Knights Sol. All of the soldiers were dress in solid military ware, nothing formal at all. The king was present in the center with both commanders on either side. The prince, the heir to the throne, was located in the back with what looked like three bodyguards. Virhn wasn’t surprised at the prince’s position. If Virhn were to attack, the prince could easily be evacuated rapidly.

Virhn calmly entered the room careful not to show any expression. A few feet away from the king Virhn stopped and kneeled respectively on one knee. As per proper etiquette, Virhn remained silent until the king spoke.

“Master Thranuil, I welcome you into my kingdom of Ainur. I have come to hear that you have a request for aid? What kind of aid is it that you want?”

Virhn lifted his head and responded.

“The aid that I request is that I wish for permission in searching the public and crown treasury, and other locations of interest within your castle for an item I need. If the item is here, I offer proper payment for it. Cooperation and permission to do so alone I understand will require some payment so I will agree to it as long as it is fair.”

“Secondly, if I don’t locate this item, I wish to gain access to the Dwarven realm through Ainur’s access point to make a similar request. I respectfully ask that you do not inquire to the nature of what I am looking for, for I cannot answer.”

The king sat silently while Virhn spoke and both commanders appeared to listen with great interest. The great audience hall was silent for a few moments before the commander of the Knight’s Sol, Commander Escari, spoke.

“Master Thranuil, I have a question I wish to pose. While you are welcome here, you come bearing a frightening reputation. What are your reasons for what happened to Bershut?”

Virhn instantly got angry for a reminder of the incident. It was not a subject Virhn was going to elaborate on with anyone. When Virhn spoke, it was with a tightly controlled voice.

“My affairs with Bershut happen to be of little concern with Ainur. Didn’t their fall benefit Ainur? If I remember correctly Ainur was in a bloody conflict with them. My actions ended that. I will not talk of the matter anymore.”

Virhn’s answer obviously didn’t sit well with the commander. The commander was about to speak again but was stopped when the king touched his shoulder. Virhn made clenched his fist on the floor in anger but still never allowed an expression to cross his face. He was also annoyed with himself for failing to anticipate that Bershut would still be on their minds. The king bent his head to speak with the Commander Kurhn. Virhn remained silent and worried that his request would be denied. He would have himself to blame since he showed anger. He had to learn to be less sensitive about the subject of Bershut especially since it was an event that had occurred almost five years ago. Virhn gave an inaudible sigh in frustration. All he could do now was wait for a response.

Ryuseu Miyamura - 6

Ryuseu could feel the warm yellow light from the sun on his face as he relaxed against an old tree. The trip so far had all but drained him of his energy and reclining against the soft moss on the tree felt especially relaxing. Ryuseu felt as though he was dreaming as he opened his green eyes to look at the beautiful scene of nature around him. The sun's radiant beams added more splendor to the new surroundings. The encounters that he had faced had been hard. He’d had to draw his sword several times that day and killed a few before making it to this spot. Riding hard all the way didn't help either, but he knew that he couldn't rest for long because it was only a matter of time before the elves of this forest noticed that he was there. If these elves were anything like the ones in his family or his neighbors then he would be in trouble. Many times he had witnessed the way that they acted towards visitors into the forest. One would never know that they were really friendly to everyone inside the clan and in the forest. 'Even though I am only part elf myself. I think... It is a wonder that they did not discard me when they found me. Ah well.' he thought to himself running his finger up his pointed ear.

Ryuseu knew that he was part elf. His emerald green eyes, pointed ears and semi green hair made this apparent. The fact that he was taller than all the elves suggested that he might have some human blood running through his veins as well. This had been an advantage when he needed to go into human cities. It made it easy to disguise the dominant heritage. There was something else about him, though, which was neither elf nor human. Being since he hadn't left the forest in almost 10 years now he knew little about outside species that lived in the shadows so knew nothing of what the other part of him could be.

The thought of his clan brought up chills because he knew that leaving the forest on his own would change the way that they would view him when he returned. Lucky for him though the elves were in great need of other tools and knowledge of the outside world. Because of the past raid by the humans at the Beligran fort, the Selians had used most of the natural resources around them to make weapons and other important products. That and the fact that he was the only one that could be disguised as a human efficiently had been part of the excuse he had used on the elder. The other part was that he was vastly curious about the outside world and playing on the elvish hatred of humans was the only way he could safely accomplish this. "Life is funny that way," he laughed to himself as he looked up through the lush canopy of the forest. "I could live here," He said thinking aloud again as he closed his eyes again to enjoy the relaxation.

Suddenly Ryuseu felt the twang of hunger resurface from before. Reluctantly he began to stand up, but halfway into the act he slumped back down against the tree. Looking to his right, he noticed a big, pulp, and juicy looking daka fruit right above him. He smiled at his luck of finding a fruit so rare in his own forest. He reached up and grabbed the succulent food and it's neighbor. Holding the large fruits with two hands, he examined them to make sure that no creatures were inside when he bit down. He took a rather big bite of the soft fruit after he had rendered it safe from any acid worms. He sighed to himself happily before he took another bite of the fruit. His horse, Desiree, lifted her head smelling the aroma that the sweet daka fruit gave off when Ryuseu bit into it. She slowly began to walk over to her rider as he took out an elaborately designed belt knife and carved out a piece of the second fruit for her. He held out his hand with a piece of the second fruit and while holding his hand flat, the white horse ate the fruit. Ryuseu cut the rest of the fruit up and placed it on a big leaf on the ground so that they both could eat at the same time and then depart quicker.

By the time they had finished the sun had begun to set in the western sky. Ryuseu stood up and grabbed several more of the sweet fruit and stuffed them into his leather saddlebag. He then swung his leg over the horse's back and urged her to gallop toward the end of the forest. Without any signs of complaint the horse began to gallop. "Wow, the sun sets quicker here. Strange I expected this place to have the same amount of day as we do, maybe even longer. Odd, also that it is not cold." Ryuseu thought aloud to himself while still keeping his gaze ahead on the tiny opening ahead that was the edge of the forest.

Darkness began to settle around horse and rider rapidly. Ryuseu urged his horse to go faster so they would make it before dark in case the town switched the entrance guard with a soldier like they did at the fort that the Selian elves usually got the products that they were really hurting for. All that hard riding paid off in the end. The city came into view with the sun still high enough that his entrance should be permitted. He noticed that there were three entrances at the gate, which was another thing that he had not anticipated. All the places he had gone to before only had two ways in and it had been easy to tell which entrance was the one to use if you were a visitor. He pulled Dessere's reins to slow her down as they began to reach the gates. After examining the gates for a while he picked one that looked most like a visitors gate and slowed his horse to a walk as they reached the city. He looked up at the guards and waited for one of them to acknowledge his presence. The guard on the left narrowed his eyes at the stranger before speaking.

“State your name, where you come from, and what business you have here,” the guard said looking down on him. The other guard just watched Ryuseu with his spear gripped firmly in his hand.

“ I’m Ryuseu and I come from a place very far from here near the Selian forest. I have come here to purchase some supplies for my village,” Ryuseu answered hoping that they would not ask him exactly where he came from.

“What supplies and how long to plan on staying?”

“Food, leather… really basic and necessary supplies. I only plan to be a few days,”

The guard stared hard at Ryuseu as if trying to read his mind. He looked to his the other guard a moment later. The other guard shook his head.

“I think we have enough strange characters here. I’m sorry, but I do not think that your entry can be permitted,” he said. Ryuseu thought he caught a glimpse of humor in the guards face, but a moment later it disappeared.

“What?! I promise not to cause any kind of trouble! I am only here for some greatly needed supplies…” Ryuseu was very surprised his entry was not being permitted. This was the first time this had ever happened to him. He should look almost completely human in the horrible lighting of the almost completely set sun. Frantically he searched his brain for the words that would grant him entry. He had to get entry. “Please…” he began to beg, but was interrupted as another soldier entered the watchtower on the left.

“What’s going on here?” he asked seeing the visitor before him.

“This man wishes to enter the city. We have decided not to grant him entry because we think that the city has enough to deal with, with you – know – who being granted entry earlier.”

The third soldier looked thoughtfully at Ryuseu for a moment before speaking. “What is name, origin, and reason for being here?”

“He claims his name to be Ryuseu and he says he’s from around the Selian forest. The reason is for necessary supplies.”

The third soldier looked the visitor over one more time before nodding his head. “You are permitted entry, but be aware that we do not tolerate anyone who causes any kind of disturbance. If you are found to be the cause of a disturbance the punishment will be very severe.”

After signaling on. of the men on the other side of the gate it was opened and Ryuseu quickly made his way into the city. The gate was closed for the night immediately afterwards. He looked around the crowded, but surprisingly clean street, for a place to stay. He ended up finding a place on the side that looked like it would be cheap enough. Covering his ears he made his way toward it through the bustling crowds. By the time he was at the other end of the street his sensitive ears began to ring. He rubbed them to soothe them a little and then messaged his temples before moving on. "I need to get into a quieter area," he said to his horse. She winnied in agreement and together they made their way down a back alleyway.

The noise grew fainter as he walked farther into the alleyway. It was lined with garbage and no people seemed to be down there. After taking another look around he reached his hand into his pocket and grabbed a small blue tablet. Ten seconds after he popped it into his mouth the ringing noise and the noise in general began to fade to a tolerable desable. His eyes began to scan the strange language on the walls and he groped his memory trying to figure out what these words meant. Slowly he remembered and found the place that he had decided to stay at. He moved his way around the building to the front entrance of the wooden building and was about to walk in when a young boy ran up to him. Surprisingly the boy was not dressed in rags.

"Excuse me, sir. May I take your horse for you?" He asked politely.

"Yes, but I want you to take extremely good care of her. She is important to me. Here I'll give you this to take extra good care of her and these to bring my bags to my room for me." He handed the boy one of the daka fruits that he had brought with him well as a small candy that he knew was rare in this area. The boys face lit up and he quickly thanked him and took the reins of the horse and led her to the barn. Ryuseu grinned at the boy. He may have hated most humans for what had happened to his kind, but he knew that not all the people were responsible. He laughed a bit as he realized that he was better at this human language than he had thought he would have been. Turning he walked straight into the inn. It was a cozy little place. The lobby itself was welcoming. 'Hmmmm. Maybe this won't be so bad after all, he thought to himself as he turned toward the man that walked toward him.

"Hello sir. I would like to know how much you charge for a room," Ryuseu said politely as possible.

"Yes, well rooms here cost 2 silvers a night. This includes meals. It does not include room service. We do not enter your room unitl you are done staying," he replied.

" I think that I shall take it for 4 or so days. What room is available? I think that I shall pay now."

"Hmmm..ok then," He replied taking out his keys and looking through them. "You may have room 18."

"Thank you sir," Ryuseu said and quickly exchanged the silvers for the key. Then he headed down the hallway. Quickly he found his room and immediately began making himself at home. He took off his cloak and hung it on the bedpost. Then he untied his sword and placed on the wall right next to his bed. Plopping down on the bed he sighed and gazed at the ceiling. 'Geez these beds are pretty comfortable for human beds,' he thought to himself and then began to drift to sleep. Dealing with humans and that long journey had left him with little energy to do anything else so he let himself fall asleep.

The next morning Ryuseu awoke quite refreshed from his long nights sleep. After stretching he got up and decided that he would try and find a human bar. He knew that they had them; it was just where they had them that he didn't know. He knew that he if he was going to deal if humans then he had better do so with a glass of their wine. Although their wine most likely wasn't going to be half as good as the ones made at home, but a glass of wine always perked him up and besides he could get information about their lands and other things. He got out of the bed and then walked toward his luggage to get a fresh cloak from it. He picked it up and put it on over the clothes the riding clothes that he had. Quickly he grabbed his sword and tied it to his belt and hid it underneath his cloak. He then walked over to the small sink and rinsed his face of in it. He left the bathroom, took his key out of his cloak pocket and walked out into the hallway. He turned and locked the unpainted wood door. He grabbed a quick bite to eat in the dining room and then left the backway, taking another shiny blue pill to ease the noise of the humans all moving about and turned up the collars of his cloak to hide his pointed ears. It was evening when he officially started his walk. He had slept rather late he realized after seeing the sun’s position in the sky.

He didn't have to walk far before he came upon a pub. He rounded the building to the front. He walked in. The place wasn't too crowded, but crowded enough. Moving to an empty seat he sat down. He looked over at the person at the other end of the table. Even though the man looked like a commoner, but Ryuseu knew that he was a soldier. He looked young, but he sensed that he had seen quite a few battles and every now and then caught a glimpse of it as he sensed the man. ' I had better get used to talking to these creatures because I am going to be doing it for a while,' he thought to himself. Before he said anything to the man the waitress moved toward him ready to take his order.

"Yes? What would you like sir?" she asked him politely.

"I would like the ainur wine please," he said reading it off the menu in the middle of the table of all the wines and beers available. She then turned and walked briskly off in the direction of the kitchen area and got the wine. She returned rather quickly as well. He sipped his wine after dismissing her and looked around a bit. The wine was a welcome treat to him. He turned toward the man across the table and then realized that he was the guard that had let him in the night before.

"Hello, there sir. Are you a soldier?" Ryuseu asked as he caught the man look at him.

The man gave Ryuseu a long hard look, but finally deemed him harmless. “Yes, I am. What of it?” the man said in a deep voice.

“Oh, nothing in particular. Just that I realized that you were the guy that let me in yesterday at the gate. Thanks for that… I really appreciated it.”

“Eh, don’t mention it. They only gave you a hard time because of Virhn coming around. I had to let you in because there was no reason to deny you. You came before the gates were to be closed for the night. So again… it was nothing.” The man drained the remainder of whatever he had been drinking and got up and left the bar. Ryuseu stared wide – eyed after the man for a moment then put down his barely touched wine, left what he owed on the table and walked out. “Virhn, here? It can’t be…”
