WELCOME
welcome to a broken tomorrow. the world is post-apocalyptic, after a terrorist problem back in 2009, and there are government created mutants on the loose. before, they were in hiding, but now they have their own safe haven; terminal city. this section is designed to help people who aren't familiar with the story we're based on to get a feel for who we are and what we do. it is to be taken as the gospel for characters allowed and such, although asking a staff member is a much more effective way of getting any unanswered questions out of the way. if you do have any questions you want us to answer, please do not hesitate to shoot us messages through the board, or ask in the chatbox. we're more than happy to help prospective members find their way.
WHAT IS 'DARK ANGEL'?
when you think of the words 'dark' and 'angel', there's a good chance you'll get something religious, or fantastical. an avenging angel, or something beautiful but with a darkness deep inside. it's not really what we're all about, and there's definitely a story there, but here are the basics:
dark angel was a television show. it starred jessica alba in her major breakout role, as well as michael weatherly (best known as tony dinozzo on ncis) and jensen ackles (best known as dean winchester on supernatural). the premise was this:
genetically engineered people, designed specifically to fight. they were concocted in secret facilities, funded by the government, and built with the most perfect dna they could ever have. they were given traits in this way, taken from specialists and experts in desired fields, as well as animals. that made them mutants, very much so, and gave them even more reason to be kept under lock and key. not all of them turned out so well, but a large percentage, known as the X series, looked like normal human beings. they were genetically designed to be assassins, most to infiltrate organizations as workers before they did the deed. they were perfect soldiers, until one unit of them escaped.
in may of 2009, twelve soldiers, aged 9, escaped from a facility in gillette, wyoming. they were hunted down for the next ten years of their lives, their risk of exposing the 'black helicopter' operation far too high for the government officials to put up with. the other 'transgenics' were put under much higher levels of security, and brainwashed into hating those who escaped. they were 'traitors'. in 2020, a recaptured escapee from that very unit of X5's returned to base, although not by choice. she subsequently escaped and burned the whole damn place down, letting hundreds of transgenics and transhumans out into the world. for the rest of that year, there was a constant struggle between the government and the 'mutants', as the latter tried to blend into the crowd, mostly to avoid being culled like animals.
eventually, however, the news got out of their existence, and their lives were in danger more than they ever were. in an attempt to rid their world of fear, many transgenics moved to a place called 'terminal city', after a spontaneous siege in seattle. it is their safe haven, although fresh out of clean water and actual food. and now, on to what you really need to know, right?
THE ABSOLUTE BASICS
. THE YEAR IS 2022. THE SETTING IS SEATTLE.
. in june of 2009, a group of terrorists set off an electromagnetic weapon, known as THE PULSE, which wiped all computers and sent almost everyone broke.
. TERMINAL CITY IS AN INDUSTRIAL AREA ON THE EDGE OF THE CITY.
a biochemical leak around the time of the pulse caused it to be abandoned.
. TRANSGENICS & TRANSHUMANS are IMMUNE to the effects of this leak.
. the leaders of terminal city are MAX GUEVARA & ALEC MCDOWELL (452 & 494)
. there is a CYBERJOURNALIST known as EYES ONLY (logan cale) who works ANONYMOUSLY to protect the less fortunate.
. the government project was known as PROJECT MANTICORE, and the soldiers knew of nothing else.
CHARACTER INFO.we are mostly based off of the canons on the show, but we do allow lots of creativity. as far as 'mutant' characters go, the following stands:
. any animal may be incorporated into a character's dna, but they MUST have a reason for it. ie, feline for stealth. nothing must be simply random. this is science, and that's just not how it works.
. ALL SOLDIERS with this genetic engineering come from project manticore.
. CLONES ARE ACCEPTED, at a certain rate. there are canon clones of MAX and BEN, hence SAM and ALEC. if we see too many clones of the same play-by, we will definitely be rejecting them.
. CHARACTER FLAWS are fantastic. not the sue kind, though. flaws in the X series can include seizures and heat cycles, due to their brain configuration and such, but we don't want to see any 'perfectly flawed' mutants. if it's a flaw, it's a flaw. deal.
. ANIMAL TRAITS have gotta match the animal. if you've got an animal with a heat cycle in your cocktail, then there's a chance it's gonna carry over, etc.
. ALL BUT ONE of the mutants has a barcode on the back of their neck, with the last three digits as their identification. please check here for which designations are taken.
. HUMAN characters can be absolutely anybody in this broken world. journalists, cops. whatever.
. MOST TRANSHUMANS ARE ANOMALIES. some may not be. they may be specifically designed for camouflage, or another purpose not specific to the human form, but most are mistakes. manticore wanted their soldiers to be at the height of all function, and that included fitting in with society.
IN CONCLUSION?the show was epic until it was canceled way back in 2002. the characters had style and class, and the sets were amazing. most figure it got canceled 'cause james cameron blew his budget on those very sets that caught our eyes. if you're still interested in this, we definitely recommend you watch the series. it had all the makings of being great for many years to come, and i guess that's why we're here.
