I figured since no one had made a subforum yet, I'd make a collection of the various materials and it can just be moved if someone actually makes a subforum for the fine art of lineartz...

Software
In theory, any image editor will work, even paint or Photoshop, however Paint does not have that many tools, and Photoshop is more made for editing pictures rather than creating them from scratch...

Personally, I suggest GIMP, which can be downloaded from here

Another alternative is paint.net, similar to GIMP. I haven't tried it myself, so I really can't compare it.
Download

Tutorials
Now, here I'm sure others can contribute more, but for now, I'll just include some links to some tutorial materials. Note that the links I provide require registration on the forum, but there is a shitton of designs to draw inspiration from, and there is a lot of refrence materials for pretty much anything military.
The main forum

How to draw a small ship

Ship bow tutorial

How to draw a turret

Camouflage Tutorial in Photoshop

Basic GIMP 2 Tutorial

Refrence Materials

Obviously the LineartInc forum above is a great source of refrence material. But here is some other stuff...

Shipbucket
Collection of hundreds (Possibly thousands) of real, fictional and other designs.

Also under Shipbucket
Various blueprints and vectors

A lot of aircraft, shown from all three sides...

Drawing Visby-styled vessels will be an interesting exercise, that's for sure.

Saw them already, not what I meant. I mean building a new one from scratch to that tune. There's one in Alt His i've been working with recently. The hardest part is making it all stealth and making the size right.

I think those of us that take part in this, should name the ship designs/designer of whatever ships we use to create ours, unless of course you come up with your own design entirely.

Those guys have gone to a lot of effort to come up with such accurate images, and I think it's only fair that if we are going to use them for our own purposes we should at least give credit.

Or, better yet, just don't delete the scale and names when you create. Common courtesy.

I'm scratch building the Flen AAS myself, fun time thusfar.

I never manage to get any ships I try from scratch just right, which is my I base most of my ships off something from Shipbucket and simply add what it was based off and who designed the original

Here's the three vessels I put together.
Aurora Corvette & Gallipoli Class frigate for Australia, and Daedalus Class logistics ship for Greece. I can edit out the flags and what not if anyone wants to use them.

Post-2012 ships of the Russian Navy

Since I have too much time on my hand, I'll be making lineart of all my surface ships for the Russian Navy. So far, I've got two down.
  • Project 2200 'Grif' Heavy Nuclear-Powered Aircraft-Carrying Task Force Support Ship
  • Project 1143.5M 'Brezhnev' Heavy Aircraft-Carrying Missile Cruiser
  • Project 1144.5 'Orlan II' Heavy Nuclear-Powered Guided Missile Cruiser
  • Project 21956 'Yastreb' Nuclear-Powered Missile-Carrying Escort Ship
  • Project 2198 'Sokol' Multi-Role Destroyer
              Project 2198.1 ASuW Destroyer
              Project 2198.2 ASW Destroyer
  • Project 1143.9 'Tsar' Heavy Aircraft-Carrying Task Force Support Ship
  • Project 1174.5 'Pelikán' Large Landing Ship
So, without further delay (click for bigger images):

Glorious T-99 Main Battle Tank. Gun might need redrawing at some point, but it looks good enough.

Not sure if this is really relevant, but I've been 3D modeling for a few years now. Though I mainly do architecture, I could also try practicing on some weaponry if anyone's interested, just putting it out there.

Go for it.
I've tried playing around with other peoples 3D models. Aircraft are the hardest to do.

I've made maybe a couple of aircrafts in the past. My most detailed one took close to a month to fully design. But sadly I lost the file after my hardrive crashed. I'll see if I still got it in me lol. I'll try to design a sample to put up by the end of the week if I can find a simple base to derive from.

This is pretty quick work for me. I decided to base the model off the T-99 lineart up there from a few rounds ago. I've actually been working on this for a few days now, that lineart there really caught my eye, quite a badass looking tank. Which is why, even though it may still need a few tweaks, I'm just about done(I'm sure a couple more details can make it look much better). Spent most of the day working on it today, yesterday, and the day before. Like I said, thats pretty quick for for me. I'd say the most difficult parts to make were the turret and track with it's respective wheels, the body was a bit troublesome as well. The armored skirt and main gun, though time consuming, were simple to make. Everything else was pretty easy to figure out, just a bit tedious to make. At some points I needed the help of the internet but for the most part, I was thankfully able to figure things out. Patience is all it really takes.

I crafted it all myself save for the simple derivable base, some parts of the track and wheels, and the Russian flag. Like I said, I've never really spent this much time going in depth with a tank (or any other weapon). I tried my best to be as detailed as possible. I wouldn't say it's my best project, but it's not my worst either. After many, many hours of designing and redesign (and a ton of layering later), here it is:

Sadly the image quality isn't too good and they came out a bit fuzzy. I've got tons more pictures if you guys like it.
