Fortnight in Review Your news in brief
Cameron responds to Russian statements on Syria
Prime Minister Cameron latched on to comments from the Russian foreign minister Lavrov which proclaimed that a UNSC solution was still viable. The Prime Minister challenged the comments, "if Russia is dedicated to dealing with Syria, we invite them to create a resolution on the matter so we can see what it is Russia envisages as being an appropriate response to this mess, and we can go from there. We and the world want a solution, and it needs to happen." Commentators already have criticized the statement, denouncing it as a loaded proposition. Speculators also suggest that it would be very likely the West will not find Russian solutions as good enough and would be a powderkeg for the issue.
Foreign Secretary calls out Argentinian statements
Foreign Secretary Hague spoke today at a brief press conference related to the EU, supporting the Prime Minister's calls for more action in Europe to prevent the Greek crisis from spreading. During a brief question period, Mr. Hague was asked about the recent Argentinian statements on the Falklands to which he responded, "there is nothing to discuss with Ms. Kirchner. Their rabble rousing about posing economic problems over the island are clearly indicative of their 20th century mentality. We're trying to move on, and they want to rehash old issues, so let them. They're trying to capitalize on a perceived weakness in the Kingdom, and it just will not be working. Good luck to them in proving they can talk with us in a reasonable way about that."
Prime Minister calls on EU, IMF to create feasible and appropriate solutions for Greece
The Prime Minister initiated discussion with the press, calling on EU's leaders to help Greece bolster its economy to reduce the need for bailouts. "Their people are rioting over job loss and a generally poor outlook. Naturally these kinds of reductions are vital for debt and deficit reduction, but their private economy must also be bolstered to raise revenue for the government. The IMF certainly needs to help out in this capacity, as do individual governments. This government certainly believes that private solutions can be created to help their people, without damaging our financial capacities for ourselves. I certainly hope to meet with Prime Minister Papademos to discuss some private solutions that'll help take some pressure off his government."

The Kingdom's News in Style: A Quarterly Update 3Q 2012
Prime Minister welcomes new Egyptian president and condolences for Mubarak family
Speaking from 10 Downing Street before heading to a session of Parliament, Prime Minister Cameron offered up a short statement on the Egyptian presidential elections, "Without a doubt, it is fantastic news that democracy has prevailed in Egypt. Let me be the first to congratulate the new president, and say that I personally look forward to meeting with and working with him in the future. I know that he has...a bit on his plate to work with to rebuild his country, so it could possibly be a mutual cooperative action and we can learn from each other. Of course, they have other issues to resolve, and I wish to encourage the new president to see to religious freedom in Egypt and be open on the Israeli issue. If the Egyptian people voted for him, we certainly are open to working with the new government. I actually hope to be the first to meet with the new president or prime minister, if he would be willing to extend such an offer.
Additionally, I understand that former president Mubarak has passed on. The sentiment may not be felt universally, but compassion demands our attention so I extend condolences to the Mubarak family. Without a doubt it is difficult to endure such a loss."
Foreign Secretary urges calm to Italy, condemns Syria, and calls for solution on Palestine
Hague addressed various topics today, after a new crisis arose between Italy and Iran stemming from the Italian Prime Minister's comments to the Israeli Knesset on Palestine. The Foreign Secretary called upon his Italian counterparts to see to a diplomatic solution with Iran, and to be "the mature state in this ordeal." The Iranian embassy was shut down and Italian civilians were pulled from Iran, and in response the Italian embassy in Iran was firebombed. "We need all of our European friends to take this issue seriously, and to address Iran as a proper state....regardless of its past. We are at a critical time for negotiating a resolve on its nuclear weapons, and it is imperative we do nothing that basically puts a foot in our mouth."
The Foreign Secretary recognized the cause of the incident, and approached it directly, "without a doubt, the cause of course is the fact that there is no road map for creating a Palestinian state or any real resolve. The fact of the matter, is there needs to be one so we can have a quieter Middle East. This government will directly be approaching Israeli and Palestinian officials to see to a peaceful resolve. Straight up, we did not handle this properly, and we need to fix it because nobody else will. It will not cost us a billion pounds [Sterling] and presuming responsible actors are present, it can be done."
Mr. Hague also briefly confronted Syria, "Mr. Assad needs to get his act together and joint the league of proper countries. One does not simply walk into legitimacy by bombing dissent. Egypt is working toward democracy after unrest, how about al Assad?"

The Kingdom's News in Style: A Quarterly Update 1Q 2013
Budget to be announced Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osbourne will deliver the fourth budget of the Conservative-Liberal Coalition, to Parliament within the coming week, the official online calendar indicates. Initial leaks indicate that a fair few reforms will be in order, though will primarily be in keeping with last years budget proposals. Among the changes will include taxation adjustments and education spending increases. Other reports show that a new defense policy will be released, falling in line with the Strategic Defence and Security Review, hence meaning other defense spending adjustments will take place and vaguely be announced in the budget. However, details are far and few as yet and will require the Chancellor's release.
Ark Royal to be sent on another voyage The former HMS Ark Royal will be temporarily re-instated as a member of the Royal Navy, participating in a short term voyage across the Atlantic, visiting Ascension, the Falklands, and ultimately Australia. Speculation has emerged as to the nature of the voyage, but defense experts expect the Ark Royal will in fact be escorted, despite its non-hostile nature. Other suspicion has emerged that the Ark Royal will complete a full world tour and possibly be sold to another country, kept as a museum, or retained in the RFA as a reserve ship.
*SIC: Official mission to carry 18 Eurofighters to the Falklands to augment forces there, and sail to Australia. Additional movements to be proclaimed in MoD thread (probably to be established).
Cameron officially responds to Commonwealth Withdrawal Crisis The Prime Minister formally made a statement on the possible Jamaican and Bahamas withdrawal from the Commonwealth Nations, for which he has come under relative attack for.
| QUOTE | "We obviously have a situation, and I've talked primarily with my fellow ministers and other government officials on what we can do here. It is pretty clear what the Jamaican officials want, and in a round about way of saying it, it is intolerable. Previously it has been cited that the sole reason has to do with the death penalty, and that is patently untrue. There also are problems with buggery and other basic institutions that no government should even attempt to...regulate. How is it that Jamaica could monitor this?
Nonetheless, we want to negotiate a good support for them to retain their presence. The Commonwealth should not only endorse the rule of law, it must endorse the growth of all of its members. Our friendly competition should not get the better of us, preventing us from keeping them out. So we are willing to engage on a mission to help out the various countries of the Commonwealth, and we must do this in a calculated manner. If these places wish to leave in haste, without a good reason...I should not say much on that. This government will engage in talks with the leaders of the Bahamas and Jamaica, and I myself will give initial direction, and of course the finer points will be delegated later. I do want to make it clear though: buggery laws and death penalties are a full stop for us. We can help create reform and help programs in Jamaica, and we can finds methods of steady job creation in the Bahamas. These are not difficult issues that require belaboured discussion beyond finding a good solution for them. |

The Kingdom's News in Style: A Quarterly Update 2Q 2013
Press release: High Representative condemns Chadian violence, calls for resolution Lady Ashton, strongly abused the ongoing situation in Chad, calling for a ceasefire from both sides and for a resolution to be crafted supporting an African Union mission to Chad.
Text of the release reads: "Without a doubt, the European Union must act in support of this fellow continental union, without hindering their involvement or efforts. The African Union has expressed an interest in developing its capacity to correct its own problems, and we see nothing wrong with this. The AU has proven capable of operating in these missions, as proven by AMISOM. I fully intend to work with the EU cabinet and the AU to direct what aid can be provided in supporting an AU mission, and we anticipate that a resolution will come forth from ongoing UNSC discussions."
Details from budget reveal purchase of electric cars Spending made in the 2013-2014 fiscal budget reveal that the Government is purchasing dozens of new hybrid-electric cars. The main purchase are those of the Lotus Ethos, with the Ministry of Defence purchasing 16 of the vehicles, while the Department of Energy and Climate Change will buy 24 of them. It remains to be seen if this is a general trend, or if it is merely an advertising gig to help the carmaker sell these vehicles. It had been announced earlier this month that a competition between Lotus, Land Rover, and Jaguar was being conducted to create an electric only SUV or cross-over vehicle for use within the government and for general purchase by the public. Each company was granted $4 million to finance research and development, with the expected prize to be a large contract for the vehicles.
Row over political party financing re-ignites Tory and Labour MP's fought it out multiple times in Parliament, with several Labour backbenchers and Harriet Harmon harassing Prime Minister Cameron during Question Time over a span of weeks. The issue remains largely unresolved, but Labour has been strongly pushing for campaign finance reform ahead of likely elections within the next year or two. However, little can be pushed against the Tory-Liberal coalition, as all three parties remain divided on how to go about the change. An assault on the Labour's propositions of flat £10,000 maximums are consistently conducted by the Tories, who additionally object to the loopholes of the proposed Labour methods. "We will handle the political financing reform, no thanks to Labour, who seem bent on having it suit only them. Political finance reform will be the result of a calculated measure, mostly agreed by the Liberals and ourselves to change the system," the Prime Minister is quoted as saying.
